A new world of connectivity is emerging. With Internet of Things, every device on the planet will be connected to other devices, sharing information, managing remote software updates and interacting with people across a wide range of applications such as smart home, smart cities, smart metering, smart buildings and more.

The Internet of Things is mostly composed of tiny devices that are powered by small batteries or by harvesting energy from their environment. Most of the time, devices are in ultra-low power sleep mode and wake-up upon events to acquire data from sensors or store data in embedded memory before being able to transmit it to the cloud. This requires very compact memory for storing data and execution code, with very low cost and ultra-low energy.

The available energy budget of IoT devices is very limited and transmitting data to the cloud is a power-hungry operation.
